UK Accelerates Solar Deployment with Over 1 GW Expected in 2025

According to preliminary statistics from the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the country’s total installed solar capacity reached 19 GW by the end of June 2025. In the first half of the year alone, 621 MW of new capacity was added, showing a steady upward trend. While these figures are still subject to revision as new data becomes available, they reflect continued momentum in the UK’s solar expansion.
In June 2025, a total of 23,351 solar systems were installed, amounting to 88 MW of new capacity. Although this is lower than the 160 MW recorded in June 2024, the final number may rise as more installation data is processed.
Large-scale solar farms are beginning to play a pivotal role. Renewable energy developer Quinbrook announced in July 2025 that its 373 MW Cleve Hill Solar Park is now fully operational and exporting 100% of its capacity to the grid, making it the largest solar facility in the UK to date.
Several utility-scale projects meeting the criteria of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) have also been approved, signaling acceleration in large-scale solar development. These approved sites include the 180 MW Byers Gill, 400 MW East Yorkshire, 500 MW Heckington Fen, and 138 MW Oakland solar farms.
To meet its ambitious 2030 target of 45–47 GW of solar capacity, the UK government is advancing multiple policy initiatives under its Solar Roadmap. These include the seventh round of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, set to launch in August 2025, which aims to offer revenue stability to solar developers. Other measures include stricter energy efficiency standards for new homes, streamlining of planning and grid connection procedures, and pilot programs to support plug-in balcony and rooftop solar systems. Incentives for installing solar canopies over car parks are also being considered.
Despite some short-term fluctuations, the UK is steadily building momentum through a combination of supportive policies and project deployment, laying the foundation for a more sustainable and solar-powered energy future.
